Firefly Jars
Your kids will let their lights shine bright with these
glow-in-the-dark mason jars!
What You Need:
Clear Mason Jars
Glow-in-the-Dark Fabric Paint (assorted colors)
Glitter (assorted colors)
1.
Dot the inside of the mason jars with the fabric
paint.
2.
For extra sparkle, sprinkle glitter into the
jars before the paint dries.
3.
Allow a day for the paint to dry completely.
Setting them in a sunlit window will help them to dry faster and will also
charge them.
4.
Once the paint dries, charge with sunlight,
bulbs, or black light. Estimated times are below:
a.
Sunlight: 5 minutes
i.
Best option. Glow will last much longer if left
in direct sunlight for a long period of time.
b.
UV/Black Light: 5-10 minutes
c.
Normal Light (Bulb): 20-40 minutes
i.
This works better if you hold the jar directly
under a lamp.
5.
Turn off the lights and watch these jars
glow!
*Tip#1: It is better to get the tubes of fabric paint
designed for dotting surfaces (so that the kids can squeeze out the paint as
with an icing tube). You can dot the jars using a brush, but the paint may not
show up as well.
*Tip#2: The brighter the light you use to charge these, the
brighter the glow will be. Also, the more quickly you bring the jars from light
to dark, the more likely you are to see a really bright glow. As they are left
in darkness, the light will gradually fade until they have to be recharged
again.
Make Your Own Bonfire
What You Need:
Orange, Red, and Yellow Finger Paint
Brown Construction Paper
Cardboard (or light brown construction paper for background)
Cotton Balls
Glue
1.
FIRE: Each child will make two or more handprints
in red, yellow, and orange in the center of their piece of cardboard or light
brown construction paper. Start by making three handprints in a row (one in
yellow, one in red, one in orange) toward the bottom of the page. Then, make
three or more overlapping handprints for additional ‘flames.’
2.
LOGS: Cut
a piece of dark brown construction paper into medium-sized rectangular strips.
Then, cut out a wedge (or a ‘mouth’) from one side of each strip. Each child
should have two of these to glue onto the bottom of their handprints with the
‘mouths’ facing in opposite directions.
3.
MARSHMALLOWS: Insert a round craft stick into a
cotton ball (if using a flat craft stick, you may glue the cotton ball onto the
stick). Then glue the stick onto the paper at an angle so that the top of the
marshmallow touches the top of the handprints.
