Pencil Shape Craft

Materials Needed For The Pencil Shape Craft:

• Yellow construction paper
• Brown construction paper
• Black construction paper
• Pink construction paper
• Aluminum foil
• Pencil
• Scissors
• Glue

This Pencil Shape Craft is an easy and entertaining project for students to make at the beginning of the school year. They are adorable decorations for your bulletin board too. When creating this back-to-school craft, young children will not only review what triangles and rectangles are, but also work on developing their fine motor skills. You can use this craft as a way to assess how your students follow directions too.

Getting the Pencil Shape Craft Ready:

To prepare for the activity, draw and cut out a large rectangle, small rectangle, large triangle, and small triangle from cardboard or other heavy paper for the students to use as templates if they are unable to cut out the shapes freehand.
Children will use the templates to draw shapes onto their construction paper. They will trace the large rectangle onto the yellow construction paper for the painted wood part of the pencil.
They will then trace the large triangle on the brown construction paper for the wood part of the pencil and a small triangle on the black construction paper for the lead.
Next, the children will trace the small rectangle on the aluminum foil for the metal part of the pencil and another small rectangle on the pink construction paper for the eraser.
After tracing all of the shapes, the children will cut them all out. Your students may need hand-over-hand help cutting if they haven’t developed their fine motor skills or hand muscle strength yet.
Finally, the children will glue all of the pieces together. It may be easier for young children to glue all of the pieces onto another sheet of construction paper and then cut out the pencil after it is put together. During this step, tell the students what to do but do not show them, This way you can assess who can listen and follow directions.

Step 1: Measure each plain brown paper bag to 3.5” high, and then trim using these craft scissors

Step 2: Draw a simple ruler guide on a piece of paper and then transfer the design onto the left side of each paper bag.

Step 3: Add a personalized welcome back message to the front of each bag.

Step 5: Assemble bags with a mixture of school supplies inside. Some easy ideas are: pencils, markers, stickers, scissors, or note pads.

Step 6: Place each welcome bag on the students’ assigned desk.

Who’s in your circle?

Students write their favorite thing inside the innermost circle labeled “love,” along with their name. Everyone roams the room writing their names inside others’ circles depending on how they feel about that person’s topic, in either “love”, “like” or “don’t like”. It helps them get to know each other better and they learn that they might share an interest with someone they didn’t know before!

Tip* you can change the outer circle to “don’t know about”  because students have unique interests this way the classmates responses are more accurate then dislike when they aren’t really familiar with the topic.
