Winter Window Decorating for your Daycare!

clip_image002
Winter Window Decorating

With December here, it is time to decorate for the winter and Christmas season. Everyone will be hanging wreaths on their doors or putting up paper snowflakes, but why not let your students get in on the decorating fun? If your classroom has a window or two then you have an opportunity to give your children the chance to personalize their classroom with their own decorations!

All you will need is fingerpaint.

clip_image004

You may also want to keep some plates or cups handy for mixing colors.

clip_image006

Just mix up a few colors for your students to use. For this activity be sure to have plenty of red, white, blue and green. Once you have a good assortment of paints let them have a ball painting the classroom windows. The washable and safe paint will come off easily after the holidays with some glass cleaner. You may want to use some dry erase markers to outline some more complex shapes for them to paint. Draw a simple Christmas tree or a candy cane for them to color in on the glass. The marker will come off just as easy as the paint! Let them get creative adding snowflakes, snowmen or anything else wintry they might want. Your students will have a blast decorating the classroom and will take pride in it all season.

Be sure to share photos of your student’s window paintings with us on Facebook and Pinterest. While you're there like and follow us for more great craft ideas and all your PureFUN! updates and more. Fun Floor Games for your classroom

Finding fun, new teaching methods is one of the best ways to help your students learn. Using games that allow them to interact with the material and visualize concepts is a great way to bring a little fun to any lesson. Some of the best resources for games are Daycare Floor Carpets.

Here are some great games to use with some of our carpets!

The Fishing for Literacy floor carpet can be used to help teach your students counting and the alphabet.

clip_image001

Teach your children to count by having them feed the fish! Simply place a bowl next to each and have your students take turns feeding each fish the proper number of worms. You can use our Wiggly Jiggley Worm Counters or even gummy worms for a tasty treat when the game is completed. If your students are already masters of counting, have them solve math problems instead. Begin by giving a student a math problem. For example, what is 3+4. Then let the student feed 7 worms to the number 7 Fish. This is a great method for keeping your students engaged and making math fun!

If your students need a little help learning their letters, then this product is perfect. The ring of bubbles containing letters is just right for an alphabet song sing-a-long. Have a student lead the class in practicing the alphabet by standing on the A bubble. As the song continues, they will follow each letter as they go by stepping or hopping in turn while the rest of the class sings the alphabet song.

clip_image003

The Blocks of Fun Rectangle is another great teaching resource. With its brightly colored squares, each labeled with shapes, numbers, and letters, it pairs perfectly with the Fun with Phonics Kit Squares and the Shapes and Numbers Squares. Your students will have a blast playing their very own giant matching game! They will become experts in their letters, shapes, and numbers all while having fun.

clip_image005

Let’s not forget about colors! Help your youngsters learn their colors with the Rainbow Rows Seating Rug. Use this great piece to play fun color matching games with the younger students or use it to help your older students learn to read. For the youngsters, hold up colored paper and have your students run to the right color on the rug. For reading practice with the older students write a color up on the board and have them find the color on the rug.

Be sure to take pictures of your children playing games on our rugs and share them with us on our Facebook. While you’re there, like us to get updates and even more games and craft ideas!

Fall Fun for your Daycare Classroom!

The fall season is in full swing. With the world becoming a sea of color and the weather turning fair, this is the perfect time for a little outdoor fun with the children. Don’t waste such a great opportunity to feed your students minds and capture their imaginations. The new season is a chance to teach your students about the natural world they see changing around them, as well as the significance of the upcoming Thanksgiving Holiday. Here are two fun outdoor activities that can be used as excellent teaching tools.

Fall Leaf Wreath

What you will need:

Scissors, Glue, Markers, Paper plates (6 inches or 9 inches), Leaves

The first step to this little project is to take your students on a little field trip outside. Just find some trees, and let them collect leaves off the ground. Make sure to take this time to teach them about the fall season and why the leaves are such pretty colors. Once every student has a good number of leaves (at least ten) take everyone back inside to build their wreaths.

Now you can start crafting their wreaths! Begin by making sure every student has a paper plate. Have them fold the plate in half, and cut a half circle shape out of it. This is the base of their wreath. Next, have them color in the ring with fall colors using color markers. If they are old enough have them cover the ring in drawings of leaves they saw outside. Now they just have to glue the leaves they collected onto the plate ring. Once the glue dries they will have their very own handmade fall wreath!

You can even let the kids put other things they find, like acorns or pine cones, onto the wreath for a bit more character.

Now that your students all have their own nature wreaths, be sure to hang them up in the class room. These wreaths go great with the Paper Plate Turkeys from this post (space holder). Just string them together and hang them around the room.

Pet Plymouth Rock

What you will need:

Paint, Rocks, Permanent Marker, Tape

Here is another simple and easy craft that can be used to teach your students some of the history of Thanksgiving. Everyone knows the story of Plymouth Rock, so take your kids outside to find their very own! It is best to use rocks from a nearby creek if possible, but any rock will do.

Once your students have had a fun morning of finding their very own Pet Plymouth Rock and learning all about the pilgrims and the reason we celebrate Thanksgiving, it’s time to go inside for decorations. Don't forget to wash the rocks very well and dry them off before beginning the craft.

Now that everyone has a nice, clean pet rock, have each student tell you something they are thankful for and write it on one side of their rock in permanent marker. Then cover that in a piece of masking tape. Now let them have a ball painting and decorating their new pets. When they are done not only will they have a neat little keepsake, but a reminder of why we celebrate Thanksgiving.

We would love to see pictures of your students Pet Plymouth Rocks and Fall Leaf Wreaths! You can share these with us on our Facebook page. Give us a “thumbs up” to receive all PureFUN! updates on our page.

3 Ways to Cultivate Initiative in your business

If you were standing on a highway, and a transfer truck was approaching at 70 miles per hour, what would you do?

I'll bet you'd move out of the way unless you have a death wish.

It's easy to take action when a tornado is coming. Would you stay in your house if it could quickly and violently become a pile of matchsticks, rocks, and glass? A few people might hold out in their homes to keep the potential looters away. But most of us would run for our lives. Besides, you can't rebuild if you're dead.

Initiative is a valuable trait to have. None of us is born with it. It has to be cultivated like the flowers in your garden.

So how do you cultivate initiative?

First, let's define it like the legendary Coach John Wooden did. He said, "Initiative is having the courage to make decisions and take action. People with initiative will take action when action is needed."

That seems easy at face value. When a train is rapidly approaching, you get off the tracks. When there's a thunderstorm, you take shelter inside. If someone's chasing you, you run with everything you've got to stay alive. But what if you're afraid? What if you don't know what to do? What if you do it wrong?

It's when what's in front of us is fuzzy that we freeze. When we freeze, we often end up doing nothing. When we do nothing, nothing improves.

Here are some strategies to address these issues that keep us from taking initiative.

First, recognize there will always be things that are unknown in any situation.

You can't know everything unless you're God. Since you're not, accept that fact. Just doing that will free you to act, knowing you could be right or wrong. Life hands you cards to play. It's up to you to make the most of what's in your hand. And just like a card game, you won't win every turn.  You can do your absolute best on every turn. That's the only thing that is really under your control anyway.

Second, you can reduce your fear of the unknown with the proper knowledge.

There are fundamentals in every profession. In sports, there are crucial skills required to win contests. When repairing a car, there are certain procedures that always work. When you travel, you have to take particular roads to get to your destination. Learn and master the fundamentals and you'll be successful much of the time. You'll have a framework that will give you boundaries, help you solve problems, and make decisions. If you are weak in any of the basics, find a mentor who can help you become stronger.

Third, you cannot develop initiative without action.

Taking initiative involves getting past your fears - fear of the unknown and the fear of failure. Developing initiative means you make decisions. If you've been alert, you've gathered valuable information through your experiences. You'll use this together with what you observe in the moment to make a choice. Depending on the time you have, you'll weigh the possible options in your mind. Once you've settled into a choice, you pull the trigger with immediate action.

You might make mistakes. You might fail. Don't worry about it. Forge ahead. Do your very best and you'll minimize the risk of blowing it. Then, when you do fail, learn from it. Doing that will add more to your self-improvement than anything you'll ever read, hear, or see in someone else.

Develop initiative. Sow the seeds of decision, knowledge, and courage. Water them with action regularly and you'll reap a harvest of initiative that will stand with you in life's biggest challenges.

Daycare Hygiene

Fall is here and winter is right around the corner, and with them come the cold and flu season. This is the time of year that good hygiene becomes invaluable, especially to childcare providers. Children are germ factories and many are simply to young to know or understand good hygiene habits. That is why it is so important for teachers and staff to ensure their students have a clean environment to learn and have fun in.

Making sure all cleaning supplies are well stocked is the first step in keeping children healthy. After all, if you don't have the proper tools for the job, the job won’t get done.

Cleaning regularly is also very important. Be sure to use disinfectant wipes and sprays to clean all surfaces and items that children might come in contact with at least once a day. Also, make sure all food preparation surfaces are cleaned regularly as well as restroom facilities.

Ensure all children and staff wash their hands regularly and thoroughly to prevent the spread of microbes. Make sure all sinks have full liquid soap dispensers, and paper towels. Using liquid soap and paper towels is the best way to ensure hand washing is effective, and children don't share germs by sharing towels, according to Healthychildren.org. Also, do not allow children to wash their hands at sinks used for food preparation or dish cleaning, as these are some of the most contaminated places in any facility or home.

Also…don't forget that a key part of keeping children healthy is teaching them good hygiene early. A bulletin board set is great for just that. Make good hygiene a regular part of your students day and they will be the happiest and healthiest they can be.

Holiday Countdown Craft

Join us in doing the Caterpillar Countdown and count down the days until your favorite holiday will arrive.

Here’s what you will need: Paper, Scissors, Markers, Glue, Wiggle Eyes and a Pipe Cleaner

Step 1: Take your paper and cut it into strips. Make sure you cut enough to have one strip to represent each day until your holiday. We will do Thanksgiving and Christmas for example.

Step 2: Get out your markers and let your children’s creativity flow! They can design each strip however they want. You could even draw things that represent what you will be doing that day! For example, a relative comes to visit on day 22 or a trip to see Santa on day 37.

Step 3: You will need your glue ready for this step. Take your first strip and bend it to make a circle. Make sure the part you colored is on the outside. Use your glue to hold your circle firmly in place.

Step 4: Take a 2nd strip and feed it through the circle you just created. This will create the links! Continue to add on links until you have one to represent everyday in your countdown.

Step 5: Take your pipe cleaner and cut it in half. These will be the antennas of your caterpillar. When you've got them where you want them, glue them into place. You can also take your wiggle eyes and glue them into place as well.

Now you have your very own Caterpillar Countdown! As each day passes you simply tear off the link that represents that day. That is how we will keep up with how many days are left to go! You can make your countdown for anything you want to. You can count down the days until a birthday or even a trip! What are you counting down the days until?

Daycare US Maps for Learning

Daycares can buy geopuzzles to help their kids to build fine motor, cognitive, language, and problem-solving skills, and are a great introduction to world geography for children of all ages. Children will learn where each American state resides and develop a great grasp on direction and location. They will learn about borders, capitals, landforms, population, bodies of water, state flags, state birds, mottos, population and mountain ranges. Puzzles are a great way for kids in preschool, kindergarten, and elementary school to learn their geography. Once your students feel that they know all of the states, get some of our blank outline US state maps and test their memories. Unlabeled maps are a great way to test whether the kids remember the shapes of each state.

Teaching Reading Comprehension

Younger students, teacher, parents, and caregivers may be interested in picture books. The teacher can either provide a story with the picture book or have children develop their own story based on the pictures they see. This will teach the students how to connect their visualization of the story to the comprehension aspect of the story. Using visualization is a great way to engage students of any age. Since reading comprehension is such an important aspect of Language Arts and the reading, writing, and speech process, it is important for teachers to make the overall process of reaching comprehension fun.

Fraction Games and Toys – Make Learning Fun

While many children are able to master some of the basic concepts associated with math such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and even division, the first area where many kids struggle is when it comes to fractions. Fraction games and toys introduce children to an entertaining and educational way of learning the crucial concept of fractions. Fraction games help to reinforce the skills that the child is learning at school while also providing them with a fun way of mastering new concepts that may have previously given them a bit of trouble. These games and toys are an excellent choice for any child that is being homeschooled.

The fraction games and toys that are available, such as Fractions Gr 1-6 Hands-On Learning, include cards, directions and even sticker so that children can be rewarded when they answer correctly. For a more hands-on approach, there is the Fractions W/ Understanding Think which helps children develop their skills by actually modeling fractions. This particular kit is an excellent choice for a group of students who are all trying to master fractions together. In the classroom, the church, childcare center and especially in the home, there is no place where fraction games and toys are not useful.

Whether a parent sees their child struggling with the concept of fractions or is just interested in helping them score better on upcoming standardized tests, fraction games and toys can make learning fun and accessible no matter what the child's competency level is when it comes to this particular math concept. Children often have difficulty visualizing fractions which is why games and toys such as the Build and Block Reading Fraction makes it easy by introducing kids to a fast-moving game that is fun and educational at the same time.

When it comes to helping kids develop the skills they need to be successful later in life, it is often necessary for parents and teachers to take a proactive approach by providing students with the materials that they need so that they can better understand the concepts being presented to them. This is where fraction games and toys come in. These affordable and fun games are so well designed that a child might not even realize that they are learning until the time comes for them to be reviewed on some of the basic concepts related to fractions. Available for just about any budget and for children of all ages, these games are fun for all.
