Reading to Children

Reading is important at any age.

In Reading Magic by Mem Fox she says, “If parents understood the huge educational benefit and intense happiness brought about by reading aloud to their children, and if every parent—and every adult caring for a child—read aloud a minimum of three stories a day to the children in their lives, we could probably wipe out illiteracy within one generation."

Most children in your child care center, Pre-school, or Day care are at an age where reading to them could shape the rest of their life.  Do you struggle to find books specific to the age group you are reading to?

At Purefunsupply.com, we offer a wide range of books for all ages. You can choose from a variety of topics, authors, and you may even come across a book that your parent or guardian read to you as a child. Wouldn’t you love the feeling of when these children get older they can say “I remember when I first heard this book, it was read to me out loud when I was little at my day care”.

Pass the love of reading along by going to purefunsupply.com and seeing our selection of books that you can read to your children and see their faces light up every time its reading time at your day care, child care center or pre-school.

Christmas Craft for ages 4 and Up

Christmas Crafts: Soufflé Cups!

Often when you think of using kitchen paper goods for crafts you think of paper plates or coffee filters but a soufflé cup can be a unique item to use. I have listed one below with two different options that make a fun Christmas Craft for home, child care centers or schools for ages 4 and older.

Soufflé Cup Christmas Tree

Materials Needed:

16 – 4 oz paper soufflé cups

1 – Each red and green crayon

3 – Q-tips

1 – Bottle of children’s glue (not glue stick)

1 – Each small container of red and green glitter

1 – 14”x15” piece of heavy cardboard

Instructions:

Step 1 – Place soufflé cups on newspaper or old shower curtain to protect surface.

Step 2 – Color inside bottom of 8 cups red and color inside bottom of 8 cups green using crayons.

Step 3 – Using a Q-tip, spread glue on outside sides of 1 red soufflé cup.

Step 4 – Sprinkle a small amount of red glitter on the glue sides.

Step 5 – Repeat steps 3 and 4 for 7 more red cups and then do the same for the 8 green cups using green glitter. Let dry completely.

Step 6 – Place the cardboard 14” length and 15” height on your surface.

Step 7 – Starting with 1 soufflé cup, place it at the very top (center) of the cardboard. Then place 2 cups (centered), touching sides, directly below first one. Place 3 cups directly below the 2 cups, 4 cups directly below the 3 cups and 5 cups directly below the 4 cups. Place the last cup (this is the tree base) directly below the middle cup on last row. Alternate the colors, making sure to use green for the base.

Step 8– Beginning back at the top, glue all soufflé cups in place. Let dry completely.

Now for the Options!

Option 1

Your craft tree can be a gift! Put pieces of small wrapped candy in each soufflé cup. You can write a greeting directly on the cardboard or write it on a separate square of paper and glue it to the cardboard. This is a perfect idea for relatives and your children’s favorite teacher!

Option 2

Your tree can be a game! Place the cardboard on a table or floor. Using heavy buttons, coins, or marbles, make up a tossing game; any number of players can play.

Holiday and Seasonal Books for Kids

December is the most holiday rich month in our year. Most families in the US celebrate either Christmas or Hanukkah. Schools and child care centers should be prepared to teach all children about these holidays, what they mean and why people celebrate them. It’s important for kids to understand why we have holidays and how different holidays are celebrated around the world.

PureFUN offers a selection of holiday and seasonal children’s books to make teaching the holidays a little easier on caregivers and teachers. These books are age appropriate and easy to understand. The holiday series variety pack covers 12 holidays throughout the year in language that is easy for kids to read. These books make learning to read easy, fun, and engaging.

Happy Holidays!

Geography Puzzles

Did you know that the first jigsaw puzzle was a map? Puzzles are still a great way for kids to learn their geography. Using puzzles of the US, children learn how the different states fit together. As they get better at the puzzle, they have a better mental image of the United States. They also have fun while learning.

There are plenty of options of geography puzzles for child care centers and schools. Simple wooden puzzles are the most classic style. Sound puzzles announce the name of the state when the piece is placed correctly, providing instant feedback to children solving the puzzle. GEOpuzzles of the US, Latin American, and the continents were designed by an art professor.

PureFUN offers a wide variety of geography puzzles for you daycare or preschool.

4 Simple Ways to Motivate Young Learners

Children are born with an intrinsic motivation to learn and positive attitude towards learning. Positive rewards and reinforcement will increase this motivation. Here are several simple strategies that you can use as a teacher to keep young students interested and motivated to learn.

Provide praise and rewards. When your students do well or when they work hard, reward them. Positive words and stickers are great for simple tasks. Adjust your praise and rewards based on the child’s individual abilities and efforts. Avoid giving nonspecific praise for something that required little or no effort.

Show you care about your students. Kids respond well when they know that their teacher cares about them. Build a positive and caring relationship with your students. Ask them how their day is going. Show enthusiasm for their interests.

Have your students participate. When children feel needed, their self-esteem and motivation is increased. Job charts are great way to teach responsibility.

Provide good explanations. Nothing kills motivation as quickly as confusion. Take the time to thoroughly explain new concepts. Check for understanding with specific questions before moving on to a new topic.

Sleep Requirements by Age

Getting enough sleep is extremely important to the health and well being of all children. The consequences of sleep deprivation include the following: altered behaviors and mood changes, impaired immune system, becoming accident prone. Childhood is the best time to establish good sleeping patterns.

It is important to understand that specific sleep requirements will vary by individual. Some toddlers can be perfectly alert with 10 hours of sleep at night while others may need 15 hours with two naps during the day. It is important for daycare centers to have a daily nap time routine: those children who do not fall asleep will still benefit from quiet time. Child care centers and preschools need cribs for babies and cots for young children.

General Requirements by Age:

1-4 weeks old: 15-16 hours per day. Newborns spend most of their time sleeping for short periods (two to four hours at a time). They wake up frequently for changing and feeding.

1-12 months old: 14-15 hours per day. Babies will start sleeping for longer periods (six hours) at about six weeks of age. They usually take two to three naps per day. This is the ideal time to establish simple bedtime routines.

1-3 years old: 12-14 hours per day. Toddlers need less sleep than they did when they were younger, but they still need regular naps. At 18-21 months, toddlers begin to take one nap per day. After 21 months, most toddlers take an afternoon nap that varies from one hour to three and a half.

3-6 years old: 10-12 hours per day. Naps become shorter at this age. By age five, most children are no longer taking naps.

First Aid Supplies: A Basic List

Kids in daycares and child care centers frequently get into mischief and small accidents. That’s why it’s important to have first aid supplies on hand. Here’s a quick list of essential items for you center’s first aid kit (individual items in bold for ease of reading):

Adhesive tape for bandages, gauze pads, and splints.
Aloe vera gel for burns.
Antibiotic ointment such as neosporin.
Antihistamine such as Benadryl. Also include any drugs prescribed by a child’s doctor to treat an allergic reaction.
Antiseptic such as hydrogen peroxide or an antiseptic wash.
Bandages for cuts and other injuries. Be sure to include several sizes of band-aids, gauze pads, and ace/elastic bandages.
Calamine lotion for insect bites.
Cotton balls and cotton swabs to apply antiseptics, etc.
First aid instruction manual Remember to read it before an emergency arises.
Hand sanitizer or soap.
Hydrocortisone cream, over-the-counter.
Instant cold packs so that you can apply a cold compress when you don’t have access to ice. These are intended for single use.
Mouthpiece for CPR.
Painkillers Do NOT give aspirin to children, however (as it is associated with Reyes Syndrome).
Plastic gloves to protect both child and caregiver from infection. We recommend vinyl in order to avoid possible allergic reactions to latex.
Scissors to cut adhesive tape, gauze pads, or even clothing in an emergency. Curved medical scissors are best.
Thermometer Temporal thermometers are best for reducing the risk of infection.

Remember to keep important medical information (such as medical history, allergies, reactions to drugs, etc) for each child on hand. At least one caregiver should have current CPR and first aid certification.

Ways to use Border Decorations

There are several ways to use border decorations in your classroom.

1. Put them around your bulletin board. Border decorations were originally marketed for bulletin boards and this remains their most popular use.

2. Divide your bulletin board, whiteboard, or chalkboard into sections. You can put a border decoration down the middle of your bulletin board to make two sections. Smaller sections can be used to display rules or homework assignments.

3. Put them around your whiteboard and chalkboards. You can decorate your boards each season or by subject.

4. Put them around your windows. Accenting your windows with border decorations will make them appear larger and brighter.

5. Use them to make a makeshift bulletin board. If your classroom doesn’t have a bulletin board, you can put borders around part of the wall. Cover the space between them with fabric or fadeless paper and tape up what you want to display.

6. Frame pictures or student work. Border decorations make colorful and inexpensive frames for anything you want to put on your wall.

How have you used border decorations in your classroom?

Classroom Charts

Classroom charts are great. They are an excellent way to decorate your classroom while reinforcing important concepts. Children’s eyes are naturally drawn to bright colors, and they read what’s on the walls in their classrooms. Educational charts are ideal for schools and come in many different types.

Incentive and motivational charts encourage students to do well in class and behave in a positive manner. Behavioral charts are a type of incentive chart that tracks behavior and rewards positive behaviors. Subject charts, such as Language Arts or Science, provide excellent reference for students (but cover them up during tests!). Multilingual charts can often be used directly in the teaching process.

Having your students make their own charts can be a great way to solidify concepts. You can either give these charts to the students for home use later or save several for next year.

The Bulletin Board

The bulletin board is the centerpiece of the classroom. Decorating the bulletin board can be a very fun project for teachers. You’ll want a good background (fabric or fadeless paper works well) and some accents. The daycare supply store carries commercial bulletin board sets with many themes. Pick a border decoration that goes with your theme to finish the edges of your bulletin board. Border decorations can also be used to mark off different sections or your board or wall. You can put classroom charts on your bulletin boards too.

Wash Your Hands Properly

Hand Washing

Washing your hands properly is the first line of defense against infections like the flu and common cold. It is very important to teach children how to properly wash their hands at a young age so that they develop good habits as early as possible.

When to wash your hands:
-Before and after meals
-Before and after preparing food
-After using the restroom
-After playing with animals
-After playing outside
-After sneezing, coughing, or blowing your nose
-After changing diapers
-After caring for someone who’s sick
-After handling garbage
-Whenever they look dirty

How to wash your hands:
1) Wet your hands with water
2) Apply a small amount of soap (portion control dispensers work perfectly for this)
3) Rub your hands together for at least twenty seconds. Have kids sing the alphabet through twice. Be sure to get your wrists and the back of your hands.
4) Rinse your hands thoroughly
5) Dry off with a paper towel
6) Use your towel to turn off water and then throw it away, if possible.

How to use hand sanitizers:
1) Apply nickle-size amount of hand sanitizer to hands.
2) Rub hands together, front and back, until dry.

Remember that regular soaps are just as effective as antibacterial ones. Hand sanitizers should be at least 60% alcohol. Children may find sanitizers easier and more enjoyable to use.

Make your own Halloween Lacing Cards

Lacing cards are a great indoor activity for kids as winter comes closer. They are easy to use and offer several educational benefits as well: as children lace, they develop their “pincher grip” which is what they will use later in writing. They also learn concentration on patterns and patience towards finishing projects.

Making lacing cards for holidays can be a fun activity for kids in daycare. Here are simple instructions for a Jack-o-Lantern card:

Materials:
Laces for Lacing
Single hole punch
Paper board (empty cereal boxes work well)
Orange construction paper
Colored pencils, markers, or crayons
Scissors
Glue Sticks

Adult Preparation Directions:
Cut the paperboard into a pumpkin shape of at least six inches across. Cut orange construction paper into the same shape and size. Repeat these two steps for as many children as are in your childcare center (or make a couple extras). You may have the children complete this step if you wish.

Child Decorating Directions:
Have children decorate their Orange construction paper/pumpkins however they wish. You can suggest that they draw Jack-o-Lantern faces and fill them in. Encourage creativity.

Once all the pumpkins are decorated, have children glue their paper to their cardboard. Let glue dry thoroughly.

Adult or Child Finishing Directions:
Punch holes around the perimeter of the pumpkin, about 1-2 inches apart.

Now your Halloween lacing pumpkin is complete and ready for use. Have your children practice lacing it with the laces, and let them take their Jack-o-Lanterns home. These instructions can be easily modified to make other shapes.

Preventing the Flu

Flu season has started and this virus runs rampant through daycares and schools. Children under the age of 2 are at greater risk for complications and even death from the influenza. There are some simple steps you can take to reduce the spread of infection in your childcare center or preschool.

1) Get a flu shot and encourage your center’s children (over 6 months) and parents to be vaccinated as well. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends the flu shot to everyone over 6 months. The vaccine is especially recommended for the following groups of people: pregnant women, children younger than 5, people working with children, people in long-term care facilities, and people with chronic illnesses. The CDC recommends getting the shot as soon as it is available (usually August or September) and before December.

2) Avoid close contact and encourage sick children to stay home. The flu virus spreads through close contact with someone who’s already sick. Tell your school’s parents that sick children should stay home. Make sure they understand that there is no penalty for missing school when sick. If you yourself feel ill, take the day off work to avoid exposing your daycare children to the virus.

3) Cover your cough. Covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing can reduce the spread of infection. Using a tissue prevents the virus from getting stuck on your hands. Unfortunately, kids aren’t so good at remembering this one, but try to teach it anyway.

4) Wash your hands. Washing your hands often will help protect you from germs (not just the flu) that you make pick up on hard surfaces and children’s toys. Hand wipes are great for young children because they’re easier to use than soap and water.

5) Disinfect your daycare center or preschool frequently. Children put their hands everywhere; they also put everything in their mouths. Virus are most often spread to the mucus membranes (eyes, ears, nose, mouth), so disinfect your childcare center’s toys, bathrooms, kitchens, and hard surfaces routinely.

6) Drink plenty of fluids. Fluids flush out the system, removing viruses and other toxins while re-hydrating. PureFun!’s juice is all natural and made especially for young children. Serving this juice at your daycare center is an excellent way to make sure your youngsters get plenty of fluids.

These simple steps will reduce, but not prevent the spread of the flu and other infections through your childcare center. We hope you find these tips useful.

Daycare Crib Fundraiser Ideas

The federal government meant well with its new regulations governing crib safety. After all, what could be more important than keeping young children safe? But the expense of complying with the new rules, which fully take effect at the end of 2012, has put many child care providers in a bind.

Some are looking for help from the people they serve, by holding fund-raisers. “You give parents a cause for why you're raising the money, and they tend to be very supportive,” said Denise Myatt, director of the New Beginnings child care center in Hanover, Penn.

A previous fund-raiser allowed the church-based school to purchase a security system with cameras in all the classrooms.

Myatt pointed out that typically, tuition income goes back to the children in the form of food, staff salaries, etc. There’s not a lot left over for items such as new cribs, which cost hundreds of dollars apiece with shipping charges.

Her school did a “Joe Corbi fund-raiser” to help pay for cribs. Maryland-based Joe Corbi’s helps organizations raise money through the sale of pizza kits, cookie dough and other items.

Looking for outside sources to pay for improvements such as new cribs is a must, as Myatt sees it. “The fund-raiser is the only way -- outside of our own pocketbooks.”

A church-based child enrichment center in South Carolina is taking a different approach. To raise money for the 23 cribs it needs to buy, the center will ask the Sunday School classes in The Baptist Church of Beaufort to commit to purchasing one or two or three cribs. Then a small plaque with the name of the donating class will be affixed to each crib.

Director Debbie Marcil said the preschool has not really gone to the church for financial help in the past, except occasionally to meet the needs of a struggling family. She noted a potential benefit from the new approach. “We thought maybe it would help give them some ownership in the preschool.”

As in many churches, the child care center has been a means of evangelism in the community. “We just had two families join in the past month,” Marcil said.

Whether by cookie dough or donations or other creative means, an enterprising child care center can get help navigating the cribs funding challenge.

Stickers, Stickers and more Stickers – Oh, my!

I love stickers and children love them even more! At home I use them on chore charts, greeting cards, wrapping paper, calendars, vegetable canning, and the list goes on. At my school, I use them as rewards and as a motivator. I put them on test papers and homework papers.

I use them on bulletin boards, borders, pictures and in crafts. In the preschool area, I use them to help teach colors and animals and shapes. I even let the children put them on their hands and shirts.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better selection than what I found at www.purefunsupply.com.

Arts and Crafts Kits, Convenient and Beneficial

Art provides many benefits to growing children. It’s fun and children naturally love it. 93% of Americans agree that the arts are vital to a well-rounded education.

Art fosters creative thinking which will benefit children their whole life. Because most kids enjoy making art, they can focus on it easily. This improvement of concentration transfers to other aspects of life. Through art, children learn that there is not always one right answer. This fosters self-confidence when kids create their own artwork. Drawing is a great way to expose kids to multiple points of view. Creating art actively engages both hemispheres of the brain to achieve full mental potential.

PureFUN offers a variety of Arts and Crafts Kits for your childcare center. Browse our selection for products help you capitalize on the many benefits of art.

C-fold towels: C fold towels look like they are named. They have two flaps that fold in to form a C shape fold. C-fold towels can fit in a multifold towel dispenser as well.

Single fold towels: Single fold towels come in both brown and white. Depending on your center, you will want to decide if brown or white works better. Typically white towels hold up better and absorb more moister. Single fold towels can only be used in a single fold towel dispenser. A single fold towel has one fold right down the middle.

Center pull towels: Center pull towels are great for many locations. Both our economy and regular center pull towels are perforated. You won’t have the worry about your students pulling too much down, the perforations will help your students only pull 1 at a time. Center pull towels come in white. They are a great towel for daycares.

Roll towels: Roll towels are great and can be used in manual or automatic dispensers. Roll paper towel for daycares come in white and brown and in multiple sizes. Depending on your dispensers you could choose the 8x350 roll or the 8x800 roll. Be sure to look out for how many feet come on your rolls, that way you can get the best deals!

Fall Fruit Fun: Apple Core Craft!

Apples are fresh and plentiful in the fall and make a fun child’s craft. I especially enjoy this one with preschoolers but older children will like it as well. You need apples for the craft and I would also suggest having additional apples as a treat once the craft is complete!

Apple Core Picture

Materials Needed:

1 – 18 x 12 sheet white construction paper

1 – Scissors

3 – Shallow trays such as pie tins

3 – Colors poster paint – red, green, yellow

2 – Apples

1 – Knife to cut apple

Newpaper to protect table surface

Instructions:

Step 1 – Spread newspaper to protect your table top.

Step 2 – The white sheet is to resemble an apple. Cut about a rounded 2-3” swath on the bottom left and right corners. Cut an indentation in the middle of the bottom edge. Cut rounded curves from the left and right top corners toward the middle of the top edge, leaving a sliver for a ‘stem’. If you are making multiple ‘apple sheets’, make a template and trace your outline.

Step 3 – Cut the apples in half from the stem down.

Step 4 – Pour a small amount paint in separate tins.

Step 5 – Place an apple half face down in the paint and then place on paper; this should make an apple shape.

Step 6 – Use a different apple half for each color. Be creative in your own picture design!

The age of the child will dictate how much help and supervision is required.

Option:

Cut the apples crosswise through the middle and the resulting print will be a star!

Fun with Paper Mache!

Paper Mache projects are always fun and messy in a good way. You are probably familiar with putting paper mache on a balloon to make a globe, maybe a piñata, or even an Easter egg. But did you know you can purchase a paper mache mask that is ready to decorate? The mask is 8” by 6”. Maybe you could decorate it and then put it on something like a free paint stirring stick from the hardware store. Be creative and let the children’s minds explore what they can do with this!

Choose the right trash can liner size

Can-Liners

If you’re like many people, you often put a can liner in a trash can and have a lot more “bag” than you do trash can! And, the thin liner breaks as you empty the trash can. Or, you pull out the x-tra-heavy liner and it feels so lightweight – because the liner is too heavy for the light contents – it feels like the bag is full of air. Choosing the right liner isn’t difficult, it’s just something that we don’t take time to do. But, choosing the right liner could mean a large cost savings overall, less ‘waste’ (no pun intended!), and less frustration.

  • Ask:
    1. Where are you using it?
    2. What are you using it for? (what is going in it?)
    3. What are the dimensions of my trash can?
    4. What types and sizes of can liners are available for my situation?

Answer these questions and your on the way to choosing the right liners for all your containers!

For great pricing on daycare can liners and trash bags visit us at www.purefunsupply.com. We offer a wide variety of daycare trash bags that will be perfect for your center.

Changing Table Sheets: Superhero Breastplate Daycare Craft!

Changing Table Sheets: Superhero Breastplate Craft!

What child doesn’t want to be a superhero? This new craft uses a changing table sheet to make a superhero breastplate. The craft can be as simple or as elaborate as you would like. It is fun for preschoolers through 1st graders and can be used in a child care center, home school, or elementary school. You can use small, deli style, 10” x 15” size changing table ½ sheets for 2 and 3 year olds and I might suggest using full size 16” x 24” changing table sheets for 4 to 6 year olds.

Superhero Breastplate

Materials Needed:

1 – Changing table sheet

1 – Hole puncher

4 – Paper hole reinforcers

1 – 2’ length of thick yarn

Various colors of crayons and/or markers

Instructions:

Step 1: Using the hole puncher, make a hole 1” down from the top and 2” from the left side of the changing table sheet. Make a hole 1” down from the top and 2” from the right side.

Step 2: Place a paper hole reinforcer on each hole, front and back.

Step 3: Gently tie the ends of the yarn in each hole.

Step 4: Use the crayons and/or markers to create a one-of-a-kind breastplate.

Options:

1) Instead of using yarn to put the breastplate on, use two clothes pins.

2) Use glue and fabric scraps to decorate the breastplate – allow to dry overnight.

3) Use glitter glue for a fancy breastplate.

4) If you want the children to have a more unified look, pre-cut the design or symbol you want with construction paper. Have the children glue it on.

5) Make it a CAPE! Use 1 to 2 inch ribbon instead yarn and turn the breastplate around to be a cape.

Have a superhero day; check out my craft on superhero masks using 6” paper plates. You can also consider decorating disposable shoe covers to put over the children’s shoes as superhero boots. Use spray paint to make them the color you want, let dry completely, and then use permanent markers to make them unique.

Complete your Superhero day with a reading of a Superhero book. Here are some to review:

Superhero Squad: Meet the Superhero Squad! By Lucy Rosen

Superhero ABC by Bob McLeod

Superhero School by Aaron Reynolds and Randy Rash

Joseph – God’s Superhero: Genesis 37-50 (Discover 4 Yourself Inductive Bible Studies for Kids) by Kay Arthur and Janet Arndt

d/Deaf and d/Dumb: A Portrait of a Deaf Kid as a Young Superhero (Disability Studies in Education) by Joseph Michael Valente
